The Starlet Program - Student Activities

I Love Book Corners

A donation booth was set up for book corner donations during the Fu Hui Gala in 2015 to raise funds for book cases and book purchases for Starlets and girls classes. This would provide more books of different varieties for the children. Beginning in September 2015, every Starlet and girls class was given a new book case filled with new books. In higher level classes, student representative are responsible for managing the borrowing and lending process of books while in lower level classes, teachers or caretakers do the jobs.

The effects of these book corners can be seen with the more than one thousand book reports sent to us. Fu Hui recruited some devoted volunteers, including teachers, book corner donors and letter writing team members to read over these reports. After reading the reports, it was easy to see how the children were so passionate about and interested in reading and that their knowledge was improved with better analytical thinking skills. During the May visit, Fu Hui volunteers brought with them the best pieces with comments from the selection team and asked the students to read them out in class. Presents were given out to the author of these best pieces to encourage them to read more. We hope that all other students will do much better with such encouragement.

Fu Hui will be expanding this project due to its popularity and benefits. More books with interpreting contents will be purchased. Here are some feedback from students,

“When I came across the exciting sections, I would be totally absorbed by the scene and I kept imagining. I love to read so much that I sometimes would forget to eat, not until after others have finished their meals would I realize that...oh, reading is good, but I’m too involved!!!” (Report on reading “The Three Kingdoms”, Hamashiri, Class 8, Empowerment Class, Jiaojihe Secondary School)

“Sometimes I would just forget to sleep and eat while reading. My writing skills have been greatly improved. If someone asks me what my secrets are? I’d say: I love reading and thinking. You see, grandpa Laoshe loves flowers, and he sweats hard for their fragrance. I love books, and through my hard work in reading, my school results are better everyday.” (Report on “Nurturing Flowers”, Jiwumochenghua, Grade 6, Shaluo Central School)
