Scholarship program- story of a student

From Liangshan to Tsing Hua

Xingqiang Du, A student from Huili Experimental Secondary School in Liangshan, Sichuan Province, obtained a score of 670 in the 2014 university entrance exam (Gaokao). That night, as the top student in the science stream in Liangshan, he received a phone call from Tsinghua University*, notifying him of his acceptance into the university.

Xingqiang comes from a peasant family in a small village in Huili Prefecture. He began his studies at Hui Li Experimental Secondary School in 2008. This is how his teacher describes him,”He loves to study and is willing to work hard. When he needs to solve a problem, he for- gets to eat. When his classmates are all resting, he would still be studying hard in the class- room. He bought a lot of extra materials at the end of senior three (G.12) and practised piles of exam questions of every subject. He is exceptionally diligent and hard-working.

Due to Xingqiang’s financial constraints, Fu Hui offered him a scholarship for his three years in high school, and because of this, he expressed his gratitude with this message to Fu Hui,

“I’m really thankful for your care and support in the past three years. I truly feel your love and expectations.

As a child from a peasant family, I understand deeply how far away and how different I am from the outside world, therefore, I never dare to give up studying or any valuable opportuni- ty to change my destiny. I may not be the best, but I strongly believe that through hard work, I will keep moving forward to a brighter future.

Today, Mr Tse came all the way to visit me in Beijing. I was tremendously touched as he brought me the warmth I needed in this unfamiliar city. I recall the times during the past three years when you visited our school, and I have the utmost respect for you all. What is impor- tant for a person is character building. I will continue to learn from you and hope to become like one of you, to bring warmth to this world by doing the most meaningful things.”

*Tsing Hua University is one of the top universities in China.
